Kawakubo has not gone to school for fashion, but studied fine arts and literature at Keio University. After graduating, she worked for a textile company, Ashai Kasei, in their advertising department, and she then became a freelance stylist in 1967. She founded her own brand in 1973, and opened up her first boutique in Paris in 1982.

Comme des Garçons is one of those brands that are very difficult for me to understand... Not the design part, because I do think that their clothes carry a feeling and something special - they are huge on deconstructed garments and crazy shapes. I am really just wondering, who buys their clothes? Who wears this stuff? Truly, works of art, because most of their designs look like abstract paintings, but what happens after they come out to the store? Strange to say the least.
