DK’s tailor dad died when she was age 3, model mum raised her up. The american designer studied at Parson's School of Design. After graduating she joined Anna Klein’s team,where after the design department’s leaders died she became the new leader.
In 1977 and 1982 she won the Coty American Fashion Critics award. In 1988 she created the Donna Karan New York line with less expensive clothes for young women and in 1990 the DKNY Jeans. She was the designer, who reckoned with the 80s power suits with her elegant lines. She designed the bodysuit, which is very popular nowadays again.
In 2015 after 30 years she resigned the design department’a leading position. She would like to spend more time for her other company and foundation called Urban Zen Company.
